My Top Podcasts of 2020

I am obsessed with podcasts, and have been since 2018 when my friend told me that she listened to podcasts on her walk to uni. I'm not going to lie, I was initially a bit overwhelmed with the selection available to me, but over the past few years have managed to whittle my list down to a select few that I listen to all the time.

For those of you who have never really given podcasts a chance, why not? There are so many topics out there because you can not only learn about your favourite topics, but also about current news events. It's also really awesome to just hear about things from someone else's perspective.

I have always listened to my podcasts on Overcast, but there are so many ways for you to listen. I know that Spotify last year released a podcast feature, and Apple Podcasts is always an option.

This is actually going to be a 2 part series, since I have so many podcasts I actually listen to. This one will focus on my general favourites, while my next post will dive into space podcasts. I've got a good mix of lifestyle, health & fitness, as well as science podcasts. So, without further ado, let's get stuck into my list of podcasts!

Clueless The Podcast

Feeling lost and clueless about where to go next, what career path to take or what to do with your life? Then this is the podcast for you! Maybe you've just graduated from university and have been thrown into the 'real world'. Or maybe you're in a job where you feel burnt-out and emotionally drained. Here at Clueless The Podcast, we want to talk about the realities of life in your 20s while discovering ways to conquer our goals and live a life we're passionate about. Inspiring guests, positive vibes and great chat - let's figure it all out together!

I love the message that Clueless are spreading, about how life can be super unexpected sometimes, and to follow your passion. I am officially obsessed with this podcast, and love hearing about the journeys that their guests have been on. They have brought on some super inspiring guests, with more to follow! I love the conversations that they have, and how each guest really relates to feeling lost at some point in their life, as many of us students/recent grads are prone to feeling. Plus, Zara and Rachel are super personable and lovely hosts!

What We Said

Intended to inspire and entertain, best friends Jaci Marie & Chelsey Jade talk candidly about health, business, relationships, life, etc. You can expect the girls to be joined by occasional guests, reading friends' & fans' stories, & offering unsolicited but heartfelt advice.

What We Said is one of my all time favourite podcasts. It's actually the podcast that initially got me hooked to podcasts in general, so I really owe it all to Jaci and Chelsea. All the episodes are so interesting, conversation flows so naturally, and it really just feels like you're having a chat with some friends in your living room. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for some casual chats about lifestyle topics, dating & marriage tips, entrepreneurship advice, insight from some incredible guests, and some absolutely hilarious guest stories.

Food Medic

Welcome to The Food Medic podcast hosted by medical doctor, personal trainer, blogger, and author, Dr. Hazel Wallace. In this podcast you will hear from leading experts in their field who share evidence based advice on how we can live healthier lives and cut through the confusing information that we find online.

Okay, so anybody who knows me knows that I freaking love the Food Medic. She is my inspiration and I literally hang on to her every word. I even have one of her books (which I highly recommend). She's super informative and educated, which is a no-brainer considering she has a medical science bachelor's, a degree in medicine, and a post-grad in nutrition. You can tell she genuinely cares about changing peoples' lives, and wants to cut through all the mis-information online. I also love the fact that the is at the forefront of a new type of medical doctor; one that understands the importance of medicine, but also believes in the power of health, fitness, and food to help you live a better life.

30 Minute Italian

Boost your confidence in speaking Italian in 30 minutes or less with the 30 Minute Italian Podcast. We cover expressions, sometimes sexy grammar, and culture through personal travel stories and detailed examples.

I absolutely love languages, and try to listen to a range of podcasts in Italian, French, and German. However, I won't go into complete detail into what I listen to, as I was maybe thinking of saving some tips on language learning in another blog post. I really like this podcast as it's easy to understand, especially as I normally listen to podcasts as I drive to work. They break down terms and expressions, and the hosts are quite engaging!

Is there really a formula for learning Italian? YES.

Wardrobe Crisis

WARDROBE CRISIS is a sustainable fashion podcast from VOGUE's sustainability editor Clare Press. Join Clare and her guests as they decode the fashion system, and dig deep into its effects on people and planet. This show unzips the real issues that face the fashion industry today, with a focus on ethics, sustainability, consumerism, activism, identity and creativity.

After seeing a documentary about where clothes go when they aren't sold in charity shops, I really wanted to make a conscious effort to learn more about the people behind the brand. I came across Wardrobe Crisis and was immediately hooked. There are so many interesting people in the fashion industry! I've also learned a lot more about certain brands and how they have made steps in creating more sustainable products.

Programme examining the ideas and forces which shape public policy in Britain and abroad, presented by distinguished writers, journalists and academics.

One area I am definitely lacking is in my knowledge of politics. I was curious about public policy in Britain, and wanted to educate myself a bit more about various topics. Each episode of BBC 4's Analysis dives into a quick discussion 30 minute discussion about a certain topic, and brings in various people to share their view. This is great if you want an interesting update about a topic that can sometimes be quite dry.

Her STEM Story

A weekly podcast about Extraordinary stories of real women in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Listen to know more about the amazing work women across the globe have been doing in the different STEM and STEM-related fields. Learn about what motivates them, what struggles they overcame, and how we can close the gender gap in male dominated fields.

Honestly could not recommend a more interesting podcast about STEM. I am so in love with Prasha and every single one of her guests that she brings on. Although I am slightly biased to the aerospace guests because that's where my interest lies, I have become so hooked on some other women's amazing stories and have never been let down by an episode. Definitely give it a listen if you're in STEM, or even if you're just curious about what some people do within STEM. Some of the guests didn't even study STEM and have come from really unique routes!

This Podcast Will Kill You

This podcast might not actually kill you, but it covers so many things that can. Each episode tackles a different disease, from its history, to its biology, and finally, how scared you need to be. Ecologists and epidemiologists Erin Welsh and Erin Allmann Updyke make infectious diseases acceptable fodder for dinner party conversation and provide the perfect cocktail recipe to match.

Before I start, I have to say one thing. Fiadhnaid Lydon, this podcast is calling out your name. Anyways, in the wake of all this COVID scary-ness, I realise that I am really not aware of how diseases came to be, and how it all works on a biological scale. Episode 43 has really great COVID info, but I don't want to focus on that in this post because you can read about it everywhere. This podcast is absolutely brilliant, as engaging hosts Erin and Erin (who are absolutely hilarious) break down all you need to know about a certain disease each episode. It's also not too complex so that the everyday listener can understand. You will learn a lot from"This Podcast Will Kill You" with a few laughs added in for good measure. Plus, you've gotta love the cocktail recommendations that they have for each episode.

Well, this is the podcast for you! I love how these episodes launch into a big discussion about everyday things that you hear about, but don't normally dig into. There are also so many episodes, that I'm pretty sure there's something for everyone. Just choose a random episode and get stuck in!

You can learn about all sorts of innovative science going on around the world, without any of the technical jargon. Plus, the host is super engaging! Regardless of whether you're an artist or a doctor, this podcast will have something for everyone!
